The Christmas Gift

Last
night I built a town on my mantle -
A two-story house with a wraparound porch,
wreaths in every window
and a warm "welcome home" glow.
A school, church, library, train station . . .
And snow . . . lots of snow
weighing down the branches of evergreen trees
and creating a winter wonderland.
Ice skaters on a pond, carolers,
and children playing in the snow,
completed my idyllic setting
of cherished Christmas memories.
This morning the Internet's headline reads:
"Al Qaeda: 'Gift' of terror on its way."
The reality of today's world
slams me in the face.
I cannot live in the past
or hide from the present threat.
But no matter what the future brings
I will rejoice that the Babe
born in that manger so long ago
still lives and rules and is coming again.
His life is the light that shines in the darkness.
I will unwrap His gifts of faith, hope
and love that will never end.

May you also unwrap His gifts
and be filled with His joy this Christmas
and throughout the New Year!
